If you have small rooms with a window in them, you can dress the window to make the area look more spacious as an illusion. You have several different types of window treatments from which to choose in dressing your windows in a small space cleverly. From sheer curtains to blinds and shades, you have many choices and ideas.
Plantation Shutters
Indoor plantation shutters are a classic style of window covering. In a small room, it gives a sense of neatness and cleanliness, and when you swing your shutters open, your space can be flooded with sunlight, which makes it seem larger. Shutters protect your textiles, such as flooring and furniture from the harmful UV rays of sunlight that can fade your decor, and they give you a great insulation factor in the wintertime. You get total privacy when they are shut, and the louvers are also shut. You can tilt the louvers to get more filtered sunlight in your small space while having an elegant touch to the room with clean lines.
Blinds
Mini blinds work wonderfully well in any small rooms, and they are cost-effective as well. If your small space has narrow frames and sills, you can choose to install aluminum blinds that take up less space. Your aluminum mini blinds should be mounted inside the window frame to look better in small rooms. You may instead choose to use vertical blinds in the window made of fabric for a splash of color. Vertical blinds are easy to maintain because they don’t attract dust as horizontal blinds do, so they are long-lasting.
If you want your room to look traditional, try wood blinds. Or, if you are on a budget, you can use faux wood blinds that look identical to hardwood blinds–but at a lower price point. Faux wood blinds work well in humid environments as well, so if your small room is in a basement, this type of blind will work very well because they resist chipping, cracking, fading, yellowing and breaking.
Drapery Panels
You can make your small space look much larger and more luxurious by hanging drapery panels that span from the ceiling to the floor. This will give the illusion that your ceilings are very tall. You can also make your space look wider by extending your drapery rod several inches past the edges of the window on both sides.
Doing both of these items and using drapery panels that are the same color as your paint on the walls (or very close to it) will meld the window treatments with your small space.
Instead, you may use cafe curtains where you only cover the bottom half of the window and allow sunlight to stream in at the top half of the window. In this case, you should coordinate your drapery colors with the colors in your room.
Shades
Roller shades work very well in small rooms. They appear as a flat sheet of fabric when they are closed and when opened, the fabric rolls up neatly into a cassette at the top of the window. You can choose to use an opaque roller shade to let filtered light in your room and make it appear larger.
Roman shades are lovely and have a classic design. They are made from high-quality fabrics that soften the edges of small windows. They also attract attention to the ceiling of the small rooms because when you raise them, they form neat and tidy folds at the top of the window and you can experiment with textures and patterns in your small space.
Woven wood shades also work well for small windows. They add texture and warmth to any room making it feel more comfortable, and they can revamp the entire room’s feel.
Valances
The combination of a light filtering roller shade and a valance on top of it is a very charming look for small spaces. You can choose a patterned valance that is soft and flowing to soften the hard lines in your small rooms. The valance at the top of the window hides your drapery hardware in style, makes your space look more extensive, and adds a nice finishing touch to any window.
